From Friday the 27th to Sunday the 29th of August, Agen celebrated its annual festival of the Prune. The Grand Pruneau Show of Agen has grown from strength to strength in recent years and since 2005, the last weekend of August or the first weekend of September has been marked by colourful and musical celebrations. This year was no exception and the town hosted a parade, celebrations, live music, arts and craft stalls, and an exhibition of martial arts including Judo, Aikido, Karate and Slam Jumping.
Reggae performances from the Ivory Coast’s Alpha Blondy and The Solar System and the Latin sounds of French folk rock group Superbus, headlined on the Friday and Saturday and on Sunday it was the turn of Murray Head who performed his classic hit “One night in Bankok” amongst other well known favourites.
Amid all the music, the parades and the revellry, interesting discourses could be heard explaining the origins of the prune industry in Agen and there were plenty of free tasting sessions on offer in and around the markets which were open through til midnight on the Friday and Saturday.
